Temuka is the central point between Christchurch and Dunedin, and offers a selection of sporting venues, including a popular 18-hole golf course, a local swimming pool, Levels International Motor Raceway and great rivers for fishing. Temuka is only 10-minutes from Timaru and Caroline Bay and only 1 hour to the lakes and ski fields.
The Temuka Golf Club offers a tidy parkland course that whilst not overly long, which many see as a positive aspect, provides an interesting challenge for all players.
The Temuka Bowling Club was awarded the New Zealand Bowls Silver Award Standard in 2013. The greens are beautifully maintained along with the generous club building. Casual players are welcome.
Temuka Domain is the largest urban park in the Timaru District, covering nearly 75 hectares. There are many stately trees scattered throughout and a small area of native bush, known as Gunnions Bush. Many sporting clubs are located in the Domain, with the following outdoor sports played: bowls, petanque, athletics, tennis, cricket, netball, golf, rugby, squash, swimming. A skate park, mini-golf course, children's playground and an aviary provide additional facilities in attractive surroundings with colourful gardens.
The Temuka RSA is located at 130 King Street, Temuka. They have an active membership and many regular activities throughout the week. They welcome all members, and as they are affiliated with Clubs NZ, they welcome any other RSA members or members of affilliated clubs throughout New Zealand.
The Temuka River is a small river originating in the hills behind Geraldine joining the Opihi below Temuka. It can provide good fishing for brown trout throughout the season. It runs close to the township of Temuka.
South Canterbury is blessed with fabulous snow-capped mountains at our back door. Temuka is a convenient base for winter skiers with several ski areas within two hours' drive including Mt Dobson, Fox Peak, Mt Hutt, Ohau and Tekapo.
The Swapmeet is a key event for the South Canterbury Vintage Car Club, held yearly on the first Saturday in April at the Winchester Showgrounds. All types of items are for sale; you might fund an abacus or a zither or automotive parts for an Alvis or a Zetor!
